NIF Portugal — Your Portuguese Tax Number

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's 9-digit tax identification number. It is the very first thing you need when moving to Portugal — without it, you cannot open a bank account, sign a rental contract, connect utilities, or do virtually anything official.

Who needs a NIF?

Everyone — EU citizens, non-EU citizens, retirees, digital nomads, students, entrepreneurs. Even if you are just buying property and not moving to Portugal.

Step-by-step (EU/EEA citizens — in person)

  1. Find your nearest Finanças office — use Google Maps or search “Serviço de Finanças [your city]”
  2. Go during opening hours (typically 09:00–15:30, Monday–Friday). Arrive early to avoid queues.
  3. Take a ticketfor “NIF” or “Número de Contribuinte”
  4. Present your documents: valid ID (passport or EU ID card) + proof of address (bank statement or utility bill from home country, less than 3 months old)
  5. Fill in the registration form
  6. Receive your NIF on the spot — on an A4 sheet of paper. Keep it safe!

Note for non-EU citizens (UK, US, etc.)

Non-EU citizens technically need a fiscal representative, but since 2022 this requirement has been relaxed for many. In practice, going in person with your passport and address proof often works. If you want to apply remotely or from abroad, online services like Anchorless charge €79–€99. Alternatively, Ponte Portugal can handle this for you (€75).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Bringing an address proof that is more than 3 months old
  • Going to a busy Finanças in central Lisbon — smaller offices in nearby towns are much faster
  • Confusing the NIF with the NHR (Non-Habitual Residency tax regime — that is a separate application)
